DIGEST was present at the presentation of the Maintenance White Book (AEM)

On Friday, January 22, 2026, the official presentation of the first Maintenance White Book took place in Madrid. This initiative, led by ISS Iberia and the Spanish Maintenance Association (AEM), provides a comprehensive, rigorous, and up-to-date overview of the strategic role of maintenance in today’s context of industrial transformation, digitalization, and sustainability.

In an environment characterized by shorter production cycles, increased regulatory demands, and growing pressure to decarbonize and improve resource efficiency, maintenance has evolved from being a purely reactive function to becoming a strategic pillar of organizational competitiveness, safety, and sustainability.

The event included institutional participation from Núria Aymerich Rocavert, Special Commissioner for Industrial and SME Competitiveness, who closed the event, as well as senior representatives from the business, academic, and trade association sectors. Among them were Javier Urbiola, CEO of ISS Iberia, and Claudio Rodríguez Suárez, president of AEM and director of Technology and Technical Services at Enagás, who emphasized the role of maintenance as a strategic investment to protect assets, reduce risks, and extend the lifespan of facilities.

Roundtable: 360 Maintenance

As part of the event, the roundtable titled «360 Maintenance: Keys to an Integrated and Competitive Model» brought together leading experts from the industrial, academic, and technological sectors. The participants included:

During the discussion, the experts emphasized the importance of reliable, real-time information, advanced analytical capabilities, and the alignment of maintenance practices with decarbonization objectives. They highlighted the need to review organizational models to facilitate agile, data-driven decision-making.

DIGEST Contribution

The DIGEST project is particularly aligned with the approaches outlined in the Maintenance White Book. In particular, one of the project’s principal investigators, Adolfo Crespo Márquez, is a co-author of the book, with a contribution focused on the role of maintenance as a strategic lever for:

  • Integrating productivity and sustainability from a lifecycle perspective.
  • Driving predictive maintenance based on data, sensors, and artificial intelligence.
  • Aligning maintenance indicators with value creation, energy efficiency, and eco-efficiency objectives.
  • Strengthening the role of the human factor, organizational culture, and digitalization as key elements of transformation.

These approaches align directly with DIGEST’s objectives in digitalization, advanced asset management, and data-driven decision-making.

A Strategic Guide for Maintenance Transformation

The Maintenance White Book is organized into nine chapters, offering a conceptual framework, real-world case studies, and practical recommendations. It addresses the transition to more proactive, digital, and sustainable maintenance models. This document serves as a vital resource for companies, asset managers, and maintenance professionals who are navigating the challenges of the green transition and digital transformation.
