PAN and DIGEST: Shaping the next generation of asset management

As industries push forward into the era of Industry 5.0, two groundbreaking initiatives are aligning to redefine the very foundations of asset management: the Physically, Artificial, and Nested (PAN) framework and the DIGEST Project. Their convergence tells a powerful story of how physical systems, artificial intelligence, and nested digital architectures are transforming the way we care for and optimize our assets.

The PAN framework is built on a simple yet profound idea: asset management requires three interconnected layers:
·   Physical: The tangible machines, infrastructures, and components that operate in real environments.
·   Artificial: The AI-driven layer, where data science and machine learning interpret signals, detect patterns, and predict Remaining Useful Life (RUL).
·   Nested: The structured integration of multiple layers (subsystems, assets, systems-of-systems), ensuring scalability and coherence in decision-making.

By nesting artificial intelligence within physical reality, PAN creates a holistic ecosystem where every decision is grounded in both real-world constraints and digital intelligence.

We are delivering the digital infrastructure needed for modern asset management. DIGEST focuses on:
·   Digital twins that mirror physical assets across their lifecycle.
·   Probabilistic reasoning to simulate maintenance scenarios, costs, and risks.
·   Microservice architecture enables flexible, scalable deployment across industries.

DIGEST ensures that predictive insights are not only generated, but also translated into strategic, real-world decisions for operations, safety, and cost optimization.

Just as an example, in a large wind farm, turbines operate under changing weather conditions. PAN ensures that the physical reality of the blades and generators is linked with artificial intelligence models predicting wear. At the same time, DIGEST runs nested simulations across the whole farm: should one turbine be serviced now or later? What is the cost trade-off across the system?

The PAN framework provides philosophy, and DIGEST makes it operational. Together, they embody the transition from reactive maintenance to nested, intelligent, and digitally integrated asset ecosystems.
