MILP and PSO approaches for solving a hydropower reservoirs intraday economic optimization problem

The peer-reviewed scientific journal Central European Journal of Operations Research has published a paper with co-authors Rodrigo Castro Freibott, Carlos García-Castellano Gerbolés, Álvaro García Sánchez, and Miguel Ortega-Mier.

The paper, aligned with DIGEST Plan Nacional project, approaches for solving a hydropower reservoirs intraday economic optimization problem. We tackle the optimization of short-term hydropower generation with multiple reservoirs, aiming to maximize revenue based on fluctuating energy prices.

The paper presents a more realistic problem than those typically found in existing research, incorporating factors such as temporal delays and water hammer effects. Despite the added complexity, our methods—a MILP model and a PSO algorithm—significantly improve upon the most commonly used approach in hydropower stations today.
